Radiography of the water treatment sector in Spain

Water is essential for life. Ecosystems, society and the economy need water. Freshwater sources are especially important, providing a resource on which human society depends. Therefore, it is necessary to monitor and care for water quality.

While the European Commission welcomes the fact that Spain has made progress in urban wastewater treatment and reduces the amount of the fine Spain pays to the European Commission, Spain must still intensify efforts to ensure that wastewater receives sufficient treatment, which requires investments to build new infrastructure or improve existing water treatment facilities.

Spain is the European leader in water reuse, since it is the country that produces the largest volume of reused water and ranks fifth worldwide in terms of installed reuse capacity, reusing 450 cubic hectometers per year (between 7 and 13% of the total).

Water for industry is a commodity, since it is used as a medium for chemical reactions, cleaning operations, refrigeration and transportation, with water-intensive industries (agri-food, paper, chemicals) generating significant volumes of wastewater. According to the Spanish Chemical Industry Federation (FEIQUE), between 1999 and 2019, the chemical industry has reduced water use by 55% by introducing more sustainable production processes, with the Paper and Cardboard industry accounting for 27% of water consumption, followed by the Chemical Industry (25%) and the Agri-Food Industry (17%).

Climate change and water scarcity, which already affects 40% of the population, are challenges that need to be addressed as soon as possible. Therefore, over the next few years, wastewater treatment, and especially industrial wastewater treatment, will take into account the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and these will be part of the daily management of companies.

Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTPI)

Within Adintus we took up the challenge and bet on efficiency and sustainability, without losing competitiveness and responding to the demanding needs in the processes involved in water treatment, in particular we focus on chemical and sustainable products for WWTPI.

Industrial water treatment plants (also known by the acronym EDARI) treat water used in various industrial processes that require, due to their specific characteristics, special treatment procedures.

Those industrial sectors where the use of WWTPI is required are:

  • Automotive and metallurgy: cleaning waters for paints, chromium plating, drilling, etc.
  • Agro-industries: Water used for washing agricultural products, water from cleaning installations and machinery, wastewater treatment for cattle and poultry slaughterhouses.
  • Petrochemical Industry
  • Mining
  • Chemical and cosmetics industry.
  • Pharmaceutical industry.
  • Textile and tanning industry.
  • Paper industry.
